Balanced Engineering & Construction (BEC) has been awarded the design-and-build contract for the environmental compliance chimney at the Mariveles Power Plant Phase II expansion in Bataan, Philippines. The project marks BEC’s return to the Mariveles facility six years after successfully delivering the emissions infrastructure for Phase I.
The contract has been awarded by ATE Energy International Co., Ltd., the EPC contractor, for the expansion project developed by San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp.
BEC Returns to Mariveles Power Plant for Phase II
Six years after completing the Phase I emissions infrastructure, BEC is returning to the Mariveles Power Plant to support the next phase of the facility’s expansion.
In 2019, BEC delivered two environmental compliance chimneys for Phase I of the power plant. The successful completion of those structures established a strong foundation of trust and collaboration with the project owner, San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp.
The award of the Phase II contract reflects continued confidence in BEC’s specialised expertise in the design and construction of complex vertical infrastructure for large-scale energy facilities.
Project Scope
The new structure will feature a double-flue configuration within a reinforced concrete chimney, designed to meet stringent environmental compliance requirements while ensuring long-term durability in demanding operating conditions.
BEC’s scope includes the engineering, design, and slipform construction of the vertical structure, as well as the installation of the internal flue systems.
Slipform construction allows the reinforced concrete shaft to be formed continuously, enabling efficient construction while maintaining precise vertical tolerances for structures of this scale.
Project Perspective
Reflecting on the return to Mariveles, Project Manager Jojo Navarro, who was also involved in the Phase I works, said:
“I’m very happy to be returning to Mariveles and working on the second phase of this project. Our team delivered the chimneys for Phase I in 2019, so it’s exciting to come back and build on that work.”
About the Mariveles Power Plant Expansion
The Phase II expansion of the Mariveles Power Plant in Bataan includes the addition of Units 5 and 6, delivering 2 × 350 MW of generation capacity.
Once completed, the expansion will add 700 MW of reliable power to support the Philippines’ growing electricity demand and strengthen energy security for households and businesses nationwide.
