Supporting employee well-being is a key pillar of Balanced Engineering and Construction’s (BEC’s) ESG approach, and Adelfa Abregana’s remarkable marathon achievement underscores how resilience and personal growth strengthen our workplace culture.

The marathon was a true test of physical and mental endurance. Around the 31km mark, Adelfa experienced intense cramping, the kind of pain that would make most runners step off the course. She paused briefly, gathered her strength, and then persisted, walking several kilometres to ease the pain.

When the cramps returned at 38km, she refused to give up.

“Quitting is not an option,” Adelfa shared. “I ran and walked and ran and walked until I reached the finish line.

Despite the challenges, Adelfa says she would “gladly continue and do my marathon passion again… next year.”

For her, long-distance running is about stepping out of her comfort zone, growing personally, and strengthening her resilience. Qualities she brings to her role at BEC every day.

Why This Matters for ESG and Employee Wellbeing

Employee well-being is a core pillar of BEC’s ESG framework. Supporting activities that build resilience, promote health, and encourage personal development contributes to:

  • A healthier and more engaged workforce
  • Stronger social impact and community wellbeing
  • A workplace culture that promotes mental and physical resilience
  • Long-term employee satisfaction and retention

Sponsoring Adelfa’s marathon participation reflects BEC’s belief that investing in our people is essential to building a sustainable, responsible organisation.

Championing the Whole Person, Not Just the Role

In engineering, we often talk about strength in terms of structures and systems, but true excellence also requires physical and mental resilience. Supporting our people in their personal goals is part of how we invest in the whole person, not just the role.

We are incredibly proud of Adelfa’s achievement and the inspiring resilience she demonstrated. Her story is a reminder that perseverance is built one step at a time, especially when the journey gets tough.

Congratulations, Adelfa. Your determination inspires us all.
