Design and Build of Steel-Framed Chimney, Indonesia

This chimney design and build project in Indonesia, undertaken by PT Asahimas Chemical (ASC), a subsidiary of Asahi Glass Co Ltd (AGC), represents a visionary pursuit. Facing the challenge of harnessing Indonesia’s low-grade coal for a 2 x 151.5 MW power plant, ASC, with BEC’s expertise, embraced the environmentally friendly CFB (circulating fluidised bed) boiler technology. As the main EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) contractor, Formosa Heavy Industries Corp. collaborated to realise a power plant that meets the nation’s energy needs and sets a benchmark for sustainability in power generation.

Challenges

The project faced constraints related to limited space during the pre-assembly of the steel frame, requiring meticulous planning and execution.

BEC's Approach

BEC, recognised for its proficiency in handling complex projects, played a pivotal role in the design and construction of the steel-framed chimney. The scope of work included the following:

Supply and fabrication of steelwork frames and flues
Precise erection of the steel frame and platforms
Heavy lifting of flues
Installation of critical components such as aviation warning lights (AWLs), lighting, lightning conductors, and earthing systems

The project was successfully completed and handed over within the designated schedule.
