Heat and Corrosion-Resistant Lining System Installed

Case Study

Heat and Corrosion-Resistant Lining System Installed

Castle Peak B Power Station, located in Hong Kong, is a leading electricity supplier in the region and a key subsidiary of China Light and Power (CLP). The facility comprises four 677 MW units and utilises a 250-meter-high chimney with four internal steel flues housed within a reinforced concrete windshield. However, these flues lacked internal linings, creating significant challenges in managing emissions and protecting the structure from heat and corrosion. CLP Power Hong Kong required a robust, heat- and corrosion-resistant lining system to enhance the durability and operational efficiency of the flues.

Project Challenges

  • Access: The confined space and scaffold design created significant specialised access challenges.
  • Schedule: The project required the installation to be completed within a tight 21-day timeframe for each unit, aligning with boiler outages.
  • Site Coordination: The work had to be coordinated with other ongoing activities at the power station, requiring precise planning and timing.

BEC's approach

BEC installed the Pennguard borosilicate lining system across all four flues, employing a specialised scaffolding design to facilitate access to all levels of the towering 250-meter structure. The project’s success was driven by effective project management, ensuring seamless coordination between various teams and stakeholders. A multi-skilled workforce comprising experienced engineers, technicians, and safety officers played a crucial role in the smooth execution of the project. The team collaborated closely to meet strict timelines, ensuring that the installation was completed within the scheduled boiler outages.

BEC’s ability to adapt to complex site conditions, combined with its unwavering commitment to safety and quality, enabled the seamless installation of the lining, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the flues.

The BEC Advantage

The Castle Peak heat and corrosion-resistant lining system project was completed successfully with the installation of 18,320m² of borosilicate lining, ensuring the flues’ enhanced efficiency and reliability. The completion was within the allocated timeframe, which helped minimise downtime and meet the operational needs of CLP Power. The project exemplified BEC’s capability to deliver high-quality, timely solutions in challenging environments.
