Jumpform Construction of Chimney

Case Study

Jumpform Construction of Chimney at Lamma Power Station Expansion

Balanced Engineering and Construction (BEC) delivered Chimney No. 5 for the Lamma Power Station Extension (Unit 12) in Hong Kong. This 110-metre-high chimney supports new natural gas power units, helping Hong Kong achieve its carbon emission reduction targets under the Climate Action Plan 2030+. The project demonstrates BEC’s expertise in jumpform construction, highlighting our ability to safely and efficiently deliver complex, high-rise industrial structures.

Project Challenges

  • Construction carried out during COVID-19 lockdown, affecting supply chain and workforce availability, while requiring strict implementation of COVID protocols, quarantine measures, and on-site safety management.

  • Chimney built on reclaimed land, requiring careful geotechnical planning and foundation design to ensure stability. Special considerations were needed for soil settlement, load distribution, and long-term structural integrity.

  • Work performed at significant heights, introducing additional safety and logistical complexity.

BEC's approach

BEC applied its jumpform construction technique to efficiently and safely build the chimney. Key elements of the solution included:

  • Strategic use of the jumpform construction method (versus slipform) to manage site constraints, structural complexity, and ensure safe high-rise operations.
  • Lifting of roof and floors using a tower crane for precise, controlled installation.
  • Design, supply, fabrication, and installation of the internal steel flue.
  • Installation of insulation and exterior cladding for durability and performance.

The BEC Advantage

Chimney No. 5 was successfully completed on schedule and to specification, demonstrating BEC’s ability to deliver complex high-rise industrial structures safely and efficiently. The project enabled faster commissioning of the new gas-fired power units, supporting Hong Kong’s transition from coal to cleaner energy sources. By effectively managing site constraints, structural complexity, and high-rise construction risks, BEC showcased its expertise in jumpform construction and its capacity to adapt to client-specific requirements and challenging conditions. The successful execution of this project reinforces BEC’s reputation as a trusted partner for specialized chimney and industrial infrastructure projects.
