Tower Shaft Slipforming

Case Study

Observation Tower Shaft Slipforming, Malaysia

In the realm of construction, BEC stands as a beacon of innovation and adaptability. The Menara Mercu Teruntum project in Kuantan, Malaysia, presented a unique challenge, and BEC was poised to excel. Under the direction of the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), the project aimed to bring the ECER Master Plan to life. Central to this endeavour was the construction of Mercu Teruntum, Promenade Extension, and associated works, and BEC was entrusted with a pivotal task.

Project Challenges

Specialised Slipform System: The design and fabrication of a slipform system were required to meet the specific needs of the towering Mercu Teruntum. The tower presented a formidable task with a total height of 118.125 meters and an outer diameter of 7.8 meters, featuring an imposing 900mm thick reinforced concrete wall.

Tight Timeline: The timeline for this project was stringent. Swift and efficient construction was paramount, requiring the utmost precision and coordination.

Site Coordination: The coordination of activities on-site was of critical importance. Harmonising the various aspects of construction, from technical support to access systems, was a complex endeavour.

BEC's approach

BEC was honoured with the responsibility of designing and supplying a slip-form system tailored explicitly for the Menara Mercu Teruntum tower shaft and encompassed the following:

  • Specialised Slipform System: BEC design and fabricated and assembled the innovative slipform system, meticulously constructed to meet the unique requirements of the project.
  • Access System: The project required a sophisticated Rack and Pinion hoist system to facilitate access during construction, further underscoring BEC’s versatility in catering to the diverse needs of complex projects.
  • On-Site Technical Support: BEC’s role extended beyond design and fabrication; the company also provided crucial technical support on-site. This hands-on guidance ensured the smooth operation of the slip-form system and adherence to the strict timeline.

The BEC Advantage

BEC’s involvement in the Menara Mercu Teruntum project was nothing short of exemplary. The company’s ingenuity, combined with its commitment to precision, resulted in the successful completion of the tower shaft. The project exemplified BEC’s capacity to adapt and innovate, even in the face of unique challenges.
