Balanced Engineering & Construction (BEC) has reached an important milestone at the Talin LNG project in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with the first concrete pour completed for the walls of two 180,000 kL LNG tanks.
The latest aerial images begin to reveal the extraordinary scale of the structures. Each tank measures 81.6 metres in diameter, giving it a circumference of more than 250 metres. Multiple concrete trucks and pumps positioned around the tanks appear small by comparison, illustrating both the size of the structures and the coordination required to build them.
The reinforced-concrete walls are being constructed progressively using a jumpform system comprising modular formwork sections arranged around each tank.
Before a wall lift can proceed, reinforcement, internal and external formwork, working platforms, access systems and safety provisions must all be installed and checked. Concrete supply, pumps, equipment and crews must then be coordinated around the circumference to maintain an orderly and controlled placement.
Once the concrete has gained sufficient strength, the formwork sections are released, lifted and reset for the next cycle.
Repeating this sequence allows the tank walls to rise in planned stages while maintaining control over quality, safety and programme.
The first pour followed an intensive period of formwork installation and preparation by the site team. Delivering an operation of this scale required detailed planning and close coordination between construction crews, supervisors, concrete suppliers and other project participants.
The Talin LNG development draws on BEC’s specialist experience in large reinforced-concrete structures and complex energy infrastructure. While many of BEC’s chimney and stack projects demonstrate scale through height, Talin is distinguished by the sheer footprint of its structures and the scale of activity required around them.
